    Description

    Indonesian (Bali) Wood Carving
    Man Holding a Rooster
Although it's not marked, this sculpture has the characteristics of older carvings from Bali.
The quality of both the wood and the carving is fine, and it
dates to about the mid 1960's.
The man is stepping forward (the heel of his left foot is raised) yet his posture is still relaxed and natural, and he's feeding the bird as he walks.
The details on the man's clothing and the cascading feathers of the rooster are very nice. The skin is polished to a satiny smoothness. These details point to the work of a skilled carver.
Some notes about the condition follow. Most issues are small relative to the overall size of the carving.
A piece of the headdress is missing on his left side (photo #9).
At the back of the base, a crack and a very small piece of wood (1/8" by 3/4") missing (photo #10).
At the back, on the sword, a couple of short cracks possibly inherent to the wood itself (#11 bottom left and right).
Pinholes here and there, also possibly inherent (#11 top left, #6 near elbow). A few small dark spots which appear to be part of the wood's natural coloring (#11 bottom right).
Three small holes in the bottom of the carving (#10) possibly attached to a display base at one time.
This is a large carving measuring approximately:
    24" high
    7" across
    5" in depth
I don't know the type of wood. It's a medium, golden brown color with a warm glow.
It seems to be solid and dense, heavy for its size.
The last picture with the soda can is only to show the size.
